How to create a passphrase

Choose how many words to use and a separator your account accepts. Generate a phrase, copy it and save it in a password manager. Six words is the default. Use a different phrase for every account and enable two-factor authentication.

Random words, rather than a familiar sentence

This generator independently selects words from the 7,776-word Electronic Frontier Foundation word list using your browser’s cryptographic random-number generator. Famous quotes, song lyrics and personal phrases are easier to guess than randomly selected words. Avoid replacing the generated words with predictable choices.

Common questions

What does the randomness estimate mean?

The estimate is word count multiplied by log₂(7,776). Six independently selected words provide about 77.5 bits of word-choice entropy. This measures the generator’s possible combinations, not a guarantee about account security or time to crack. Fixed capitalization and separators do not add randomness to this estimate.

Can words repeat?

Yes. Each word is selected independently, so repeated words are possible. This is expected behavior.

What if a website limits password length?

Check its length and character rules before using a passphrase. For shorter limits, try our password generator. Do not simply cut off part of a saved passphrase without checking the result.

Can I recover a previous passphrase?

No. We do not store generated phrases. Copying uses your device clipboard. Save a phrase before generating another one or leaving this page.
