How to download and install Blender on Mac

Identify your Mac processor first, then use Blender Foundation’s official disk image and copy Blender into Applications.

Check Apple silicon or Intel

Open the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. An M-series chip means Apple silicon. Current Blender 5.x releases require Apple silicon and macOS 13 or later. Blender 4.5 LTS is the last release supporting Intel Macs, so an Intel owner should select the compatible LTS download rather than the newest Apple-silicon-only build.

Install from the DMG

  1. Open Blender Foundation’s download page.
  2. Select the compatible macOS version.
  3. Double-click the downloaded DMG to mount it.
  4. Drag Blender.app into the Applications folder.
  5. Eject the disk image and open Blender from Applications.

Approve the first launch

macOS may ask you to confirm the application the first time it opens. A genuine Blender download should come from blender.org. If macOS blocks a file from an unidentified or unexpected source, do not bypass the warning until you verify the download.

Updating Blender on Mac

Download the newer DMG and replace the existing Blender.app in Applications. If you need two versions, rename the existing application before copying the new one. Keep backups of important project files and test add-ons because not every add-on is immediately compatible with a major release.

Common Mac issues

If Blender quits at launch, confirm the Mac’s chip, macOS version and selected Blender branch. Check available storage and disconnect unusual graphics accessories during troubleshooting. Intel Macs should use a compatible older branch instead of an Apple-silicon download.
