Which Windows package should you choose?

The standard installer is the simplest option for a personal PC. It creates shortcuts, can register file types and places VLC in the normal applications folder. A portable archive keeps the program in one folder and may be useful when you do not want a normal installation.

Check whether the download page offers a build for your Windows architecture. Most current PCs use 64-bit Windows. Do not assume an ARM build and an x64 build are interchangeable.

Install VLC step by step

  1. Open the official VideoLAN download page.
  2. Select Windows and download the appropriate installer.
  3. Review the publisher shown by Windows before allowing changes.
  4. Choose components and file associations deliberately.
  5. Launch VLC and test one trusted local file.

Set VLC as the default player

Windows lets you choose defaults by file type or application. Open Settings, search for Default apps and select VLC for the video or audio formats you want it to handle. You do not need to assign every media format to VLC.

Windows troubleshooting

  • Use the current stable release unless a work project requires a specific version.
  • Update Windows and the graphics driver if video is black or flickers.
  • Reset VLC preferences if an experimental setting prevents playback.
  • Do not download missing codec packs from pop-up advertisements; VLC already supports many formats.
