OTP Rate Limits: Why Too Many Requests Get Blocked

Learn how resend timers and verification limits work and how to recover without extending the block.

Services limit OTP requests to prevent abuse, control messaging costs and protect accounts from automated attacks. A limit may apply to the phone number, account, device or network address. Repeated tapping can extend the waiting period rather than make a message arrive faster.

How limits appear

You may see a countdown, a ‘try again later’ message or no new SMS at all. Some services silently reuse the same code for a short window, while others invalidate every earlier code. The exact threshold is intentionally not public because attackers could use it to optimise abuse.

What to do

Stop requesting codes and wait for the time stated on screen. If no duration is shown, pause for at least 30 minutes before one careful attempt. Keep the same trusted device and normal connection. Switching networks or creating new accounts may look more suspicious and prolong restrictions.

Fix the original issue first

Before retrying, confirm the number, country code, signal, blocked-message settings and SIM status. Use the service’s official alternative method if presented. Do not use multiple temporary numbers to evade a verification restriction; that may violate the service’s rules and trigger a broader block.

Contact support effectively

If the limit remains after the displayed period, contact official support with the account identifier, approximate attempt time, country and carrier. Never send a password or OTP. A screenshot of the error can help after personal details are redacted.

Quick checklist

  • Stop repeated taps
  • Wait for the full timer
  • Correct number and network issues
  • Keep the normal trusted device
  • Use official support if the block persists

Frequently asked questions

Will changing IP address remove a rate limit?

Not reliably. Limits may use several signals, and evasion attempts can increase risk controls.

How long do limits last?

It varies by service and risk level. Follow the displayed timer and official support guidance.
