TRAVEL
Receiving OTPs While Travelling or Roaming
Prepare your SIM, roaming settings and backup authentication methods before international travel.
Travel can interrupt OTP delivery even when ordinary data works. The registered SIM may not connect to a partner network, short-code messages may be restricted or the number may become inactive. Prepare before departure, especially when banking and email access depend on SMS.
Before leaving
Confirm international roaming status with the carrier, keep enough balance or an active plan and verify that incoming SMS is supported in the destination. Update recovery email, save account recovery codes and register an authenticator app, passkey or security key. Test the backup while still at home.
Keep the registered SIM available
A travel eSIM can provide data while the original SIM remains enabled for incoming SMS. On dual-SIM phones, label each line and avoid accidentally disabling the registered one. Review roaming charges before answering verification calls or using mobile data.
Troubleshoot abroad
Manually select an available partner network if automatic registration fails, toggle airplane mode and restart the phone. Confirm the SIM has not expired. If ordinary SMS also fails, contact the carrier through its official app, website or international support channel.
Avoid risky workarounds
Do not move financial or primary-email verification to a public temporary number. Do not ask strangers to receive codes. Use official recovery options or wait until the carrier restores service. After returning, review sign-ins and remove travel devices you no longer use.
Quick checklist
- Enable and verify roaming
- Register a non-SMS backup
- Keep the original SIM active
- Know the carrier’s official support channel
- Avoid public-number workarounds
Frequently asked questions
Do incoming OTP texts cost money abroad?
Carrier rules vary. Confirm pricing and availability before travel.
Can a data eSIM receive OTPs for my normal number?
Only the line assigned that number receives its SMS; keep the original SIM active unless the carrier supports another arrangement.
